The Benefits of Living in the Present!

We live in a rapidly changing world that continually challenges us to learn new skills and allow change. This requires a mindset that embraces new ideas, norms, and challenges as they arise on a daily basis. While change may seem overwhelming, it is actually essential for our growth and well-being.

It is key to embrace change, become more flexible, and master new ways of doing things - including new technologies. Within all of this, what is most important is the focus of your thoughts. Ruminating on the past only builds a foundation for anxiety and depression. And worrying about the future soon turns into ongoing fear. What is the answer? Living in the ‘now moment’.

What is living in the ‘now moment’? A common viewpoint from psychologists and spiritual practitioners is that living in the moment is simply embodying mindfulness - a moment to moment awareness of one’s experience without judgement. Mindfulness is a state, not a trait. While it might be promoted by certain practices or activities, such as meditation, it is not synonymous to it.

This ‘state’ also offers a solution to unhappiness and anxiety. There is a growing body of scientific evidence that shows being present in the current moment without negativity can change one’s experience from depression to happiness. Most anyone who has moved in the direction of mindfulness living, has found that they are happier and even more enlightened.

There are also health benefits associated with living in the moment. Contrary to popular belief, stress is not a pressure from the outside; those are stressors. What creates stress is your individual response to those stressors. Each person’s response to a given stressor is different. In fact, we are all so unique that one person’s stressor can be another person’s tonic.

By simply focusing on the present, you can eliminate so many negative thoughts and reduce your stress. Why? Focusing on the present stops toxic thoughts from flowing through your mind unopposed. It also stops toxic thoughts from flooding your body with adrenaline and stress hormones - preventing a breakdown of your immune system or extreme exhaustion.

Studies show people who regularly engage in activities such as relaxation, meditation, prayer, and other spiritual practices, can prevent chronic stress and anxiety, lower their blood pressure, accelerate healing, and prevent disease. Additionally, it gives you the tools to exercise control over your life, health, and happiness!

Here are a few tips to help you focus on the present.
    1. Focus on one thing at a time. Multitasking can create tension and increase the opportunity for mistakes.
    2. Listen to your body. Pay attention to how your body feels and where. Try talking to your body in meditation state. Find out what it wants – then give it to your body!
    3. Establish a practice of meditation. Mediation is a valuable tool for many reasons. It helps train you to be in the moment with your breath and focus, which then can be brought into your day. It also slows you down - offering a restorative pause within your day.
    4. Become a master of your mind. Your words and thoughts create everything. Be intentional with your mind and thoughts throughout each day.

Remember, being mindful can lead to increased happiness, lower stress levels, and improved physical health. So let's take a deep breath and enjoy the present moment!
